Autumn 2015 Hair Trends

LOW PROFILE

There were messy ponytails (at Michael Kors, left) and sleek ponytails, side ponytails (Dior) and ponytails wrapped in metal (Carolina Herrera), but what they all had in common was that they were seriously low. And, lucky for us, something about that dialing down of the height ended up raising them from cheerleader territory to new levels of sophistication.

TAKING SIDES

We know, we know, there are really only two ways to part your hair, but amidst all the '70s references for spring, you have to forgive us for kind of forgetting about the deep, glamorous side part. This season, it came back in a big way, at Giambattista Valli (left), Rochas, Balmain and more.

THE NEW TWIST

The classic French twist shed its high society image in favor of a looser, younger, cooler look for fall that predictably won over the downtown set immediately. At Chanel (left), Sam McKnight embraced messiness and ease with his twist, securing it with a statement piece pin and thick ribbon; for Tom Ford, he topped it off with a braided extension; and at Hermès, Guido Palau showed his version of a modern equestrian updo.

MAKING WAVES

Hairstylists, it seems, collectively bought into the "if it ain't broke..." motto, because spring's prettiest, simplest trend—bohemian waves in long hair—is being carried over into fall. The focus is on thick texture and kinky movement (like at Anna Sui, left) that looks like you simply braided damp hair, let it air-dry, then unwound to effortless perfection.

MOTO CLUB

Sure, there were some bobby pins and gold clips, but the best accessories on the runway were all done in luxe leather. Proenza Schouler (left), Fendi and Honor took the headband route (though the latter's were noticeably less punk), while Derek Lam and Tanya Taylor wrapped ponytails up with hide.

BACK STORY

Here, Matthew Williamson showed the half (more accurately, fourth) up style in all its simplicity, while others added crimped details, teeny-tiny braids and elegant twists that took it new places.

Leave it to Prada), Marc Jacobs and Balenciaga to make ponytails and knots completely, quirkily their own. At all three, Guido was the master behind the sky-high styles that referenced '60s society fixtures.
